The virus causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and is transmitted by the Deer Mouse and the Cotton Rat. The chances of people getting this disease are very low, however, the consequences are very serious. The major symptoms may not appear until the illness becomes life-threatening. More than 50% of the patients who have gotten the disease have died. In this videotape people who have survived Hantavirus Disease describe what it is like to have this illness.
